CIULLA GIROLAMO

Girolamo Ciulla (Caltanissetta, 1952 – Pietrasanta, 2023) began exhibiting in 1970, participating in the VII Rassegna d’Arte Contemporanea at Palazzo del Carmine in his hometown. From 1987, he started collaborating with Tiziano Forni, founder of the eponymous gallery in Bologna. This marked the beginning of a career filled with national and international exhibitions, commissions for public squares in Italian cities, and participation in Biennials. He spent much of his life in Pietrasanta, near the “sources of marble,” until his passing in December 2023.
Ciulla’s choice of travertine reflects his ongoing exploration of Mediterranean myths; original symbols with profound evocative power frequently recur in his works, as do temples — especially those in Agrigento — which recall the ancient origins of civilization and the culture of his native Sicily. His sculpture is concise in form, yet at the same time highly expressive, evoking a distant memory.
“Ciulla brought the beauty of antiquity closer to us, placing it in our homes through his sculptures, and we hope it doesn’t create a flooded sea, since without travertine, Girolamo does not know how to exist in the world.” – Giorgio Soavi
