Peter Mathis was born in 1961 in Hohenems, Austria, where he currently lives and works. A self-taught artist, he has been working as a professional photographer since 1986. His photographic work, initially focused primarily on outdoor and sports subjects, has taken him around the world.

Since 2009, he has dedicated himself to landscape photography, deliberately choosing large formats and black-and-white photography. He studies the laws and limits of black-and-white imagery closely, in order to capture its immense range of expressive possibilities and translate them into his images. From 2012 to the present, the number of Peter Mathis’s exhibitions has steadily increased, with his photographs displayed in solo and group shows in Vienna, Budapest, Moscow, Prague, Paris, Zurich, and Basel.

Mathis’s artistic production is based primarily on the effects of light on the image and careful photographic composition. He makes optimal use of the light inherent to his subject to enhance its expressive impact. His photographs are therefore not mere reproductions of a landscape but rather a thoughtful, on-site reworking of the subject through the camera.
