VIOLA GIOVANNI

Giovanni Viola was born in 1981 in Modica, where he currently lives and works. In 2008, he earned a degree in law from the University of Messina, all the while cultivating his passion for art through visits to exhibitions and cultural events — traveling across Italy and spending a year in London — as well as through drawing and painting with oil and pastel, applied primarily to the landscapes of his native land. A Sicilian at heart, Viola portrays his homeland with great delicacy and profound respect, guiding the viewer gently into the Sicilian hinterland and to remote coastal corners far from typical tourist routes, using a language faithful to the pictorial tradition and dedicated to capturing the essence of things.
His frequent use of pastel emphasizes the ethereal quality of the medium, where sky and sea merge on the horizon, suggesting serenity and infinity. The total absence of figures highlights the landscape as the undisputed protagonist. Among his themes are enchanting “Guccione-inspired” views, imbued with a rarefied atmosphere and the distinctive light for which Viola is a skilled interpreter. Immobile and silent, his seascapes are captured in frames of clear visual synthesis, with expansive skies looming over vast, captivating seas, transformed into metaphysical scenes beyond time and space.
